Troubleshoot Common TypingVoi Problems

Fix the most common TypingVoi problems around permissions, shortcuts, models, cleanup, file transcription, text delivery, and profile activation.

This guide is for people who already tried TypingVoi and hit a specific problem they want to fix quickly. Use it to match the symptom you see, check the most likely cause, and jump to the exact setup guide when you need the full workflow.

Start with the fastest checks

Before changing several settings at once, confirm these basics:

  • TypingVoi is still running in the menu bar.
  • The profile you expect is actually selected or auto-activated.
  • The required model is installed for that workflow.
  • Your current plan includes the feature you are trying to use.

If the problem is tied to a paid feature such as multiple profiles, file transcription, or Cleanup AI, check Understand Free Trial and Pro Features first.

Microphone permission is missing

Typical signs:

  • recording does not start
  • TypingVoi cannot hear your voice
  • the microphone test or live recording stays silent

Fix it in this order:

  1. Open macOS System Settings.
  2. Go to the privacy section for Microphone.
  3. Make sure TypingVoi is allowed.
  4. Return to TypingVoi and try one short recording again.

If it still fails, also confirm that the correct input device is selected and the input is not muted. The full permission and shortcut walkthrough is in Fix Permissions and Choose Shortcuts, and microphone selection is covered in Tune Recording Audio and the Recording Panel.

Accessibility typing is not working

Typical signs:

  • transcription finishes but text is not typed into the target app
  • Insert at Cursor behaves like nothing happened
  • TypingVoi falls back to the clipboard instead of inserting

Check these items:

  1. Make sure TypingVoi has macOS accessibility permission.
  2. Confirm the profile is set to Insert at Cursor, not Clipboard Only or Do Nothing.
  3. Test in a normal editable text field such as Notes or a plain text input.
  4. If the app is still unreliable, switch that profile to Clipboard Only.

The full setup steps are in Fix Permissions and Choose Shortcuts. Output mode and insertion target behavior are explained in Control Where TypingVoi Inserts or Copies Text.

Shortcut capture is confusing

Typical signs:

  • the main recording shortcut does not trigger
  • you expected a profile shortcut, but the global shortcut still runs
  • hold-to-record behavior ends too quickly or stays active too long

Work through the shortcut logic like this:

  1. Check whether you are editing the main app shortcut or a profile-specific shortcut.
  2. Record the shortcut again slowly and confirm the final key combination is saved.
  3. Test whether another app already uses the same shortcut.
  4. If you use hold-to-record, adjust the hold threshold and test again.

The full distinction between the main shortcut, hold behavior, and profile-specific shortcuts is in Fix Permissions and Choose Shortcuts. If the shortcut issue is really a profile-selection problem, also check Create Profiles for Different Apps and Workflows.

The model is not installed

Typical signs:

  • a model appears in recommendations but cannot be used
  • transcription or cleanup asks for installation first
  • a selected model later shows as unavailable

Fix it like this:

  1. Open Settings > Model Library.
  2. Search or filter for the model you need.
  3. Install it and wait for the download to finish.
  4. Return to the profile or file transcription screen and select it again if needed.

TypingVoi separates discovery from installation. Seeing a model in the list does not mean it is already on your Mac. The full install flow is in Download and Manage Models.

No compatible model appears for the selected language

Typical signs:

  • the language is selected but the model picker looks empty or too limited
  • the recommended model list does not show what you expected
  • a profile or file workflow cannot continue with the chosen language

Try these checks:

  1. Confirm the profile language is the one you actually want, especially if Auto would be a better fit.
  2. Turn on any option that reveals more than the default recommendations, if available.
  3. Install one of the compatible models shown for that language.
  4. If the workflow is file transcription, choose from installed compatible models only.

Language and recommendation behavior are explained in Choose Languages, Models, and Custom Vocabulary. Model availability and installation are covered in Download and Manage Models.

No output was inserted

Typical signs:

  • the transcript completed but nothing appeared where you expected
  • the target app lost focus during recording
  • TypingVoi finished, but the result seems missing

Check the delivery path:

  1. Open the current profile and confirm Where final text goes.
  2. If it is Do Nothing, this is expected behavior.
  3. If it is Insert at Cursor, confirm accessibility permission is enabled.
  4. Check whether the transcript was copied to the clipboard instead of inserted.
  5. If the app is unreliable, switch to Clipboard Only.

The exact delivery modes and Original Field versus Current Field behavior are in Control Where TypingVoi Inserts or Copies Text.

Clipboard fallback is confusing

Typical signs:

  • you chose Insert at Cursor, but TypingVoi copied text instead
  • you are not sure whether fallback means something failed
  • the result exists, but you had to paste it manually

This usually means transcription succeeded and direct insertion did not. That is normal fallback behavior, not usually a lost transcript.

The usual causes are:

  • accessibility permission is missing
  • the target app does not expose a normal editable field
  • focus changed before delivery
  • the app accepts paste more reliably than direct insertion

If you want predictable manual control, set that profile to Clipboard Only on purpose. For the full delivery model, read Control Where TypingVoi Inserts or Copies Text.

Cleanup test failures

Typical signs:

  • Test Selected Model fails
  • the result box stays empty
  • cleanup works in theory, but the selected model cannot run

Check these causes in order:

  1. Confirm your plan includes Cleanup AI in Understand Free Trial and Pro Features.
  2. Make sure Run cleanup is available for the current profile.
  3. If you selected a local LLM, confirm it is installed in Model Library.
  4. If you selected a remote LLM, confirm the endpoint, model ID, and API key are valid.
  5. Leave Keep original on failure on if you still want the raw transcript preserved.

The full cleanup setup and test workflow is in Clean Up Transcripts With AI. Local model installation is covered in Download and Manage Models.

File transcription is unavailable

Typical signs:

  • the Transcribe File area is locked or missing
  • you cannot start a file transcription job
  • the model picker for file transcription has no valid choice

Check the likely blockers:

  1. Confirm your current plan includes file transcription in Understand Free Trial and Pro Features.
  2. Make sure you selected an installed compatible model.
  3. Confirm the chosen language and model make sense together.
  4. Try a supported audio file you can open normally on your Mac.

The full workflow is in Transcribe Audio Files on Mac. If the issue is missing models, go to Download and Manage Models.

A profile is not auto-activating as expected

Typical signs:

  • TypingVoi keeps using the wrong profile in a specific app
  • you created multiple profiles, but switching does not happen automatically
  • a manual profile choice keeps overriding what you expected

Work through the profile setup again:

  1. Open the profile and confirm the correct app is assigned.
  2. Check whether you matched the exact app you actually type into.
  3. Make sure the profile is different enough from your default workflow to be worth separating.
  4. Test by bringing the target app to the front, then opening TypingVoi again.

Automatic activation depends on app matching, so the wrong app assignment is usually the cause. The setup steps are in Create Profiles for Different Apps and Workflows.

When the problem still does not fit

If none of the sections above match cleanly, narrow it down before changing more settings:
